Classroom Management Strategies

Before I became an instructional designer, I was a teacher for several years.  When I was promoted to department chair, I was responsible for creating training for my team and for the district.  This is one of the training courses that I designed.

As department chair for a team of twelve ELA educators, I am responsible for on boarding and training new ELA teachers. For this project, I conducted a survey of all new teachers in the building to determine where additional training might be needed.  Classroom management was identified as an area of concern for 90% of the survey participants.  In addition, in evaluating aggregate data from formal observations, classroom management was identified as a low-scoring rubric component with an average of 2/5 for new educators.  I designed this training course as one part of a module on classroom management.

Target Learning Goal: Given a heterogeneous, on-grade level class of middle school learners, first-year ELA teachers will identify and apply effective classroom management strategies to facilitate learning in the classroom as evidenced by a rubric score of at least a 3 out of 5 on the "Managing Student Behavior" in the Environment section of the TEAMS educator rubric.
